I have to admit, that such an original point of view may result a bit challenging for some readers. But one thing that is clear is an amazing research that the author must have undertaken. Even so, the book doesn’t sound scientific and doesn’t bombard us with data or too many details. We can simply appreciate the coherence of the world described by Paull.

Having in mind how unusal the plot is, the last thing I would like to talk about, not to make any spoilers, is the fact that the animals and their interactions are not idealised. We can see lots of cruelty but also emotions that some might consider specifically human.

If you feel intrigued and would like to ponder some questions about the book, Donostia Book Club meeting this month is on June, 10th. Among others, we are going to try to answer questions from Women’s Prize Reading Guide:

What were your thoughts regarding the parallels between human and dolphin patriarchal societies?

In Pod, gendered sexual violence is present in the ocean as it is on land. How does Paull represent sexual abuse in the novel? Did it surprise you to read about this?

What effect did reading Pod have on your own feelings toward ocean pollution, climate change and the protection of animals?

Paull includes a note at the end of the book explaining how she wrote Google’s story based on real-life military intelligence gathering techniques. Are you shocked to learn that dolphins are used by governments in this way?

Corsair, 2023 261 p.
