La luz difícil

Tomás González

Sexto piso, 2023

148 orr.

ISBN 978-84-19261-60-1

Orbital

Samantha Harvey

At Donostia Book Club, we start the year by discussing Samantha Harvey‘s novel Orbital. Published in 2023, it won the 2024 Booker Prize and stands out for its original subject matter and the way it is handled in such a brief space. The author tells us about four astronauts and two cosmonauts on the International Space Station. I say ‘tells us things’ because we don’t see their entire stay, nor their complete past, nor do we know anything about their future. We have images, scenes, random thoughts, connected by the fact that they are all in low Earth orbit at the same time. That is why some people question whether this book can be considered a novel: as it has no plot, it deviates from the typical structure of this literary genre.

Seda

Alessandro Baricco

«Era 1861.

Hau da Seda-ren testuingurua; 90eko hamarkadan Alessandro Baricco idazle italian handien artean kokatu zuen istorioaren momentu historikoa.

Orlando

London: Penguin Books 2019

Post hau ingelesez dago.

The next Donostia Book Club selection is one of the most imaginative and boundary-breaking novels in English literature: Virginia Woolf’s Orlando: A Biography.

Published in 1928, Orlando tells the story of a young nobleman in Elizabethan England who mysteriously lives for over three hundred years. Not inly this, partway through the book, Orlando wakes up as a woman. Orlando continues through the centuries, witnessing the changing fashions, politics, and literary styles of England, while reflecting on what it means to live, love, and create. Even today it’s feels strikingly modern and innovative.
